Middle Level Sample Question:
Log in to UnitedStreaming at: www.unitedstreaming.com.
Use my login: richarc and password: lincoln
Do a search for images using the term World War II (use two "I"s)
Check out the pictures in UnitedStreaming by clicking the image links. Read the captions for more information about what's featured in the picture. Make some observations about what you see in the photos. Go beyond "they are black and white". What do the images represent? Who is featured in the photos? What do you notice about the settings? Use your background knowledge about the second World War to make these observations.
Look here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11809733/ for images of the current Iraq War. Make observations about these photos. Again, avoid statements like "the pictures are in color". Be aware that some of these photos are quite graphic, but they are photos that have been featured on the network news. Talk with a neighbor after you have a page of observations. Compile your lists of similarities and differences that you notice about these wars.
High School Example:
Take a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_relations_of_the_United_States. Read about the "collective understanding" about foreign policy in the United States. Decide whether or not you agree or disagree with the statements at the top of the page claiming to be "under fire". Weigh in on each of the five bulleted statements at the top of each page. Cite examples that you have witnessed or heard about recently that back up your opinion.
